State Farm has appointed Mike Fernandez vice president, corporate communications and external relations. Fernandez joins State Farm from ConAgra Foods, where he was chief communications officer.
Fernandez, 49, has led the public relations function at three other Fortune 500 companies – U S WEST, CIGNA and Con Agra Foods. He also served in various communications and marketing roles at Eastman Kodak Company and was press secretary to former U.S. Senator Ernest F. Hollings. His selection ends a year-long external search by State Farm to bring in a leader with substantial experience in communications and government affairs.
“Mike’s extensive experience in managing corporate reputations and driving strategic public relations programs will contribute in our efforts to effectively engage key stakeholders, including customers," said Bill King, executive vice president, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company.
Fernandez and his teams have earned top honors from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), and the American Marketing Association among others. In 1999, he was named "PR All Star" for strategic communications by Inside PR magazine.
Fernandez is a double graduate of Georgetown University, where he earned a B.A. with honors in government and a M.S. in accounting. Fernandez has served on various state and national boards associated with education, economic development and the Latino community. He also served on the school board and city council in Rochester, NY. He currently is a trustee of the Institute for Public Relations and a board member of the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education.
