Luis A. Aguilar, alum of the 2005 HACR/HBS Executive Education Program on Corporate Governance, has been named Lawyer of the Year for 2005 by the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA). Aguilar is a partner in McKenna Long & Aldridge’s corporate practice, where he focuses on corporate governance, corporate finance and securities and international transactions.

“On behalf of HACR, I congratulate Luis on this important recognition by his fellow colleagues,” said Rima K. Matsumoto, executive director of HACR. “The fact that he was selected by a special review committee from some of the most highly regarded attorneys in the country speaks volumes of his dedication and leadership.”

“This is such an exciting time for the Latino community in our nation. Our diversity, contributions and prominence have never been stronger and to be selected for this honor alongside my legal peers is very humbling, indeed,” said Mr. Aguilar. “As more Hispanics enter the legal profession, I am optimistic about this organization’s [HNBA] future and the positive impact we will continue to have in our country.”

Aguilar’s previous experience includes serving as general counsel, executive vice president and corporate secretary of INVESCO and a member of its board of directors and management committee. Previously, he served as INVESCO’s managing director for Latin America. His career also includes tenure as partner at several prominent national law firms and as a staff attorney at the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Active in numerous civic and business associations, Aguilar is one of the original members of the Advisory Council of Hemisphere, Inc. In August of 2005, the Atlanta-based Latin American Association named Aguilar chair of the board of directors. He is also on the board of several nonprofit organizations: Georgia Hispanic Bar Association, Girl Scouts North West Council, Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, UNICEF S.E., Leadership Atlanta, and CIFAL Atlanta, Inc.

Recently, Aguilar received MALDEF's "Excellence in Leadership Award" in April 2005, and the 2005 Member of the Year Award by the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law and holds a master of law degree in taxation from Emory University.
