Washington, DC – Today President George W. Bush nominated Carlos M. Gutierrez, chairman and CEO of Kellogg Company, to serve as the new secretary of commerce. The nomination is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

"We are extremely pleased that President Bush has selected one of the best and brightest Hispanics to be part of his new economic team," said Alfonso E. Martinez, president and CEO of the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility. "Mr. Gutierrez is a solid choice because he is a results-oriented corporate leader who has a great reputation in Wall Street. He has made Kellogg a corporate role model that we encourage other FORTUNE 1000 companies to follow. Kellogg has two Hispanics among its board of directors and a strong commitment to the Hispanic community. Under his leadership, Gutierrez has turned around the company and made Kellogg the number one cereal maker in the United States, increased its sales by 43 percent with a corresponding 131 percent increase in earnings per share to its shareholders. Furthermore, Mr. Gutierrez automatically becomes a role model for Latino youth to see every day in the news, and to know that there are people who look just as we do in positions of influence."

Mr. Gutierrez is the embodiment of the American Dream. He joined Kellogg de Mexico in 1975 as a sales representative in Mexico City. Following several sales and marketing assignments, he was promoted and transferred in 1982 to Kellogg’s corporate headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan, as supervisor, Latin American marketing services. The following year, he was promoted to international marketing services manager and, in 1984, Mr. Gutierrez was promoted general manager of Kellogg de Mexico. In January 1989, he was appointed president and CEO of Kellogg Canada Inc.

He returned to Kellogg’s corporate headquarters in January 1990 as corporate vice president, product development. He was promoted to vice president, Kellogg Company and executive vice president, sales and marketing. Kellogg USA in July 1990 and to executive vice president, Kellogg USA and general manager, Kellogg USA Cereal Division in 1993. In 1994, Mr. Gutierrez was promoted to executive vice president of Kellogg Company and president, Kellogg Asia-Pacific. In 1996, he was named executive vice president, business development. In June 1998, he was appointed president and COO. In January 1999, he was elected to the company’s board of directors and, in April 1999, he was appointed president and CEO.

Mr. Gutierrez is a co-trustee of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Trust. He is a member of the board of directors of the Colgate-Palmolive Company and Grocery Manufacturers of America.

Mr. Gutierrez studied business administration at the Monterey Institute of Technology in Queretaro, Mexico.
